Li Shangyin (812 - 858) was one of the most well-known poets of the late Tang Dynasty. At his early age Li Shangyin was appreciated for his talent and became a successful candidate in the highest imperial civil service examination. But he was unsuccessful later in his political career and died in depression at age 46 in Xingyang. Li Shangying's poems vary in subject matter: some express his frustration in his political career, some reflect the political life of the late Tang Dynasty, some are historical odes using the past to disparage the present, and some are untitled poems depicting love life which are most favored by readers of later generations. His poems are novel in design, euphuistic in wording, rich in imagination and touching in style. The poems are compiled in Collection of Li Yishan's Poems. |
