Song Hu is a bronze vessel made during late Western Zhou dynasty. Hu is a wine vessel. Song Hu is named after its maker "Song". It is now in the National Palace Museum. Song Hu has dignified shape and structure and splendid patterns. The body is ovally square, and there is one beast head holding a ring in its mouth at both sides of the neck. The vessel is decorated with wave pattern and flood dragon pattern. The round foot and the lid are decorated with scale pattern and curled pattern. Song Hu is inscribed with 151 characters inside the mouth rim and on the external surface of the lid. The contents of the two inscriptions are the same. They record that Song accepted the appointment by King Zhou to be in charge of Luoyang storehouse. The vessel was made by Song to express his gratitude to the king, commemorate his deceased parents, and pray for peace and prosperity of the country and longevity of King Zhou. |
