The Dianchun Hall is located in the northeast of the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. It was built in the early years of Emperor Daoguang's reign during the Qing Dynasty. The name comes from a poem line by Su Shi, "Cui dian chun yan". From September 1853 to February 1885 when the Shanghai Small-Sword Society launched the uprising, it was a command post of the uprising army in the north of the city. Chen Alin, one of the leaders of the Society, once issued orders and commanded the army here. The Dianchun Hall covers an area of 300 square meters. It is a five-hall construction surrounded by rockery, stage, Hexu Hall etc, which constitute a scenic spot. In the hall are kept a huge painting named "Swordplay Watching" by the late Qing Dynasty painter Ren Bonian and a couplet written by the calligraphist Shen Yinmo which eulogizes the heroic and lofty spirit of the Small-Sword Society uprising army. In addition, some cultural relics including weapons once used by the uprising army, sun-moon coin cast by themselves, and manuscripts and so on are also kept in the hall. |
