Between 1977 and 1979, a primitive culture site covering 20,000 square meters was discovered at Peiligang in Xinzheng County of Henan Province. The site was composed of a dwelling area and a graveyard.

Most houses in the dwelling areas are semi-subterranean buildings, with kitchen ranges and complete sets of pottery articles inside. A total of 114 tombs were discovered. The tombs all face the south, reflecting the common belief of the community. The funeral objects were arranged in different ways, which indicates that division of labor had already existed at that time.

The Peiligang Culture dates back to around 6000 BC. It opened a brand-new page in the study of clan commune development in the south of the Yellow River.
