Chai Shao (? - 638) was born in Linfen, Jinzhou Prefecture (in present Shanxi Province). He was a general of the Tang Dynasty and one of the twenty four meritorious officials enshrined in the Lingyan Pavilion. His grandfather and father were both high-ranking officials of the Northern Zhou and Sui Dynasties. He was brave at a young age and became famous in Guanzhong for his chivalry. He married the daughter (Princess Pingyang) of Li Yuan, who didn't stand out at that time. When Li Yuan revolted in Taiyuan, Chai Shao immediately departed from Chang'an to Taiyuan and joined the rebellion as a brave general who charged forward. After the Tang Dynasty was established, he followed Li Shimin to quell riots of Xue Ju, Song Jingang, Wang Shichong and Dou Jiande. Chai Shao defeated Tuguhun and Tangut with a scheme when they invaded the border. Chai Shao was seriously ill at the 12th year of Zhenguan Period (AD 638). Emperor Taizhong of Tang paid a visit in person. Chai Shao passed away before long and he was conferred the title of Military Supervisor of Jingzhou Prefecture and the posthumous title "Xiang". |
