When Fan Wenzhen Gong (regerring to Fan Zhongyan, a great statesman and celebrated literary man of the Northern Song Dynasty) was a prefect in Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province), many of the civil and military officials got recommendation and promotion, but not Su Lin, a xunjian [an official stationed in a remote strategic place under the jurisdiction of a zhou (administrative division bigger than a xian) or a xian (county) in old days] far away at his own post.
