In the Song Dynasty, Liu Cuiping, the daughter of the Prime Minister living in the City of Luoyang, decided to choose her future husband by throwing a silk ball from a tower. The one catching the ball would be her choice. There were lots of young men gathering in front of the tower, including aristocrats, influential merchants, sons of rich families and handsome richlings...but none of these people hit her fancy. Liu Cuiping lost her heart to a poor scholar named Lv Mengzheng, who caught the ball. Her choice angered her Prime Minister father, who drove her daughter and her husband away. They lived in a shabby cave, where they helped each other to get through the difficult time. Lv Mengzheng ended up passing the imperial exam and getting a high official position thanks to his diligence in learning.
