The Battle of Yiling, also known as the Battle of Xiaoting, is a battle in 222 AD during the Three Kingdoms period in China, when the Kingdom of Wu and Shu battled for the strategic area of the eight counties of Jingzhou. It is also a famous example of successful proactive fortifications in ancient battle history of China. In the battle, the Wu army retreated to induce the enemy, exhausted and defeated the army, creating a good example of turning recovery into counterattack. After the battle, the Shu Han regime lost its power, while Wu was facing the potential attack from the North Wei regime. The two had to continue the ally against Wei. The battle is one of the three grand battles in the Three Kingdoms' history, i.e. the Battle of Guandu, the Battle of Red Cliffs and the Battle of Yiling.
