On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was founded. Wanderings Of Sanmao became the first feature film that had released to the public in Shanghai since the foundation of the People's Republic of China. The first round, it was shown up at the six most famous cinemas at the same time. The figure Sanmao played by Wang Longji was welcomed and praised by the audiences and the film circles. During the public exhibition period, the Women's Commission of Shanghai Film and Drama Association organized a charity sale. Wang Longji and some other film stars sold a set of cartoon cards of Sanmao that were specially drawn by Zhang Leping and a set of specially shot photos of Sanmao, namely Cartoon Sanmao, Film Sanmao, and Real Sanmao, at the gates of cinemas. The film also made a huge splash in Nanjing and Ningbo during its public presentation.
Le Parisien of May 5, 1981 reviewed that "Wanderings Of Sanmao is The Kid of China. It shows the misfortunes of an orphan wandering on the streets. Though amusing, it is a heart-breaking tragedy". "The film maintains the cartoon's original style…warm, moving and humorous, and discloses the evil reality in China at that time."
In 1983, the film won the Jury Award at the 12th Figueira Da Foz International Film Festival of Portugal, and The Special Mention Award at the 14th Giffoni International Film Festival of Italy in 1984. Wang Longji was recognized as "one of the four greatest child stars in the world" for his excellent performance of Sanmao.
