As the monetary value of silver varies in different dynasties, calculation of the value of numismatics is usually performed by using general exchange of equivalents. According to the records on rice price during Taiping Period, the value of one tael of silver can be roughly calculated as follows: it equals to RMB 150-220 in the middle and late Qing Dynasty, to RMB 600-800 in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, to RMB 600-1300 or RMB 1000-1800 in the middle of the Northern Song Dynasty, and to RMB 2000-4000 in the prime time of the Tang Dynasty.
