Shitong (史通, Generality of Historiography) was the first monograph on historical comments in ancient China written by Liu Zhiji, the famous historian in the Tang Dynasty. Historical comments, also called historical reviews, though covering extensively, generally include historical theory and historical criticism. The historical theory deals with the styles and compilation of history as well as the historiographer system, while the historical criticism involves in comments on historical events, study on history books and investigation into and correction of historical events. Totaling 20 volumes and consisting of the Outer Chapters and Inner Chapters, the Shitong (史通, Generality of Historiography) gave not only detailed analysis to and incisive comments on the past chronicles and biographies, but also comments on the genres and styles of history books, collection of historical materials, and history-writing principles. Also he pointed out that the historians had to be equipped with three kinds of 'merits': talent, learning and knowledge on history, which has exerted great influence to the late historical science. |
