
A man stole a cow and was caught by the owner, but he insisted that the cow was his. Both came to the local magistrate. Neither of them could produce any proof of ownership. It was one man’s word against another’s. Magistrate Gu ordered the cow to be set free. The cow walked straight to its owner’s place. Thereupon the thief was convicted.

It reminds me of another ancient story. A Chinese army lost its way while marching in a desert area. After many futile attempts, the commander hit upon a bright idea. He freed a few old horses who eventually led the army out of the desert and back to its home base.
