Zhao San and Zhou Sheng were good friends. They planned to go to Nandu together to do business.

On the morning of the departure day, Zhao San arrived at the harbor too early, and so he took a nap in the ferry boat. The boatman, seeing the gold that his passenger was carrying, moved the boat to a quiet spot and threw Zhao San into the river. Then he returned and pretended to be fast asleep.

When Zhou Sheng arrived, the boatman told him that Mr. Zhao had not showed up yet. After waiting a long time, Zhou Sheng asked the boatman to go to Zhao San’s house to hurry him up.

“Mrs. Zhao,” the boatman shouted, knocking at Zhao San’s door, “why has Mr. Zhao not come yet?”

“What?” Mrs. Zhao was upset. “He left home a long time ago. How come he has not arrived yet?”

Zhou Sheng was shocked. For three days he and Mrs. Zhao went looking for Zhao San everywhere. But there was no trace of the man. They reported the case to the local authority.

As Magistrate Yang studied the case, he thought to himself, “The boatman called out to Mrs. Zhao when he knocked on the door. That suggests that he knew her husband was not at home.”

Interrogation confirmed his suspicion, and the boatman was convicted of murder.
