Zhao Yan, a scholar in the Tang dynasty, bought a painting of a beautiful woman from an artist. He cherished the painting very much.

“A woman so beautiful can never be found in this world,” he said to the artist. “I’ll marry her right away if she were a real person.”

“She can be real,” the artist said. “Her name is Zhen Zhen. Call her name day and night for a hundred days, and she will answer. As soon as she answers, pour some wine into her mouth and she will be a human being.”

Zhao Yan started calling “Zhen Zhen” the following day. He called her day and night ceaselessly. On the hundredth day the woman answered, “Yes.”

Zhao Yan hastened to pour some wine into her mouth. Suddenly her body moved and she walked out of the painting.

“Thank you for bringing me here,” she said, smiling at him. “I am willing to be your wife.”

Zhen Zhen ate and drank like an ordinary human being. A year later she bore Zhao Yan a son.

Two years went by. One day Zhao Yan met an old friend in the street. “Your wife must be a spirit,” said the friend. “Sooner or later she will do you harm. Let me give you a magic sword to kill her.”

“I have to bid you farewell, my dear,” said Zhen Zhen the moment Zhao Yan came home. “I am the goddess of Mount Heng. I married you because you were sincere. Now you harbor suspicions about me. I can’t live with you any longer.”

Tears were rolling down her cheeks, and then in the twinkling of an eye she mounted into the painting with her son, spitting out the wine she had drunk earlier. The painting was the same as the original one, except that a boy was added to it.

Editor Says:

Our thoughts have a great impact on the world around us. If we focus our thoughts on the good, the result is happiness. If we focus our thoughts on the destructive, the result is misery. In our thoughts lies the key to changing our life.
