Zeng Shen was staying in a place of Lu called Fei where someone of his namesake killed a man in a violent quarrel. A neighbor rushed to his mother, who was weaving, and told her. “Your son had killed a man.”

“My son would never do such a thing,” she replied confidently. “You must be mistaken.”

A few moments later, a family friend came and said, “Your son has killed a man.”

Zeng Shen’s mother ignored him and continued weaving as though nothing had happened.

But when a third man came and repeated the story, she lost her faith in her son. Dropping her shuttle, she fled in fear.
