After crossing the Yangtze River, the king of Wu and his hunting party climbed a mountain inhabited by monkeys.
Knowing their lives were in danger, the monkeys all fled into the forest. But there was one monkey who thought he could outsmart the hunters. Swinging from one tree to another nonchalantly, he made a show of his dexterity. The king of Wu raised his bow and shot at him. The monkey nimbly swerved and caught the arrow with his hand.
Annoyed, the king ordered his men to shoot all at once. Unable to dodge the coming arrows, the monkey was killed; his body, bristling with arrows, was nailed to a tree trunk.
The king said to his followers, “The monkey was killed because he was arrogant. He tried to show how clever he was, but he was not really smart. Take this as a lesson.”
