Six students were on their way to the capital to sit for the imperial examination. When walking along the banks of River Bian one evening, they were surrounded by a dozen bandits. Among the students was a tall and strong man named Huo. He was very good at martial art and had a nickname General Huo.
Huo asked his companions not to panic but stay where they were. Wielding a cudgel in his hand, he confronted the bandits by himself, hitting them mercilessly. Soon everyone of the bandits was knocked to the ground, their legs broken.
The students reported what had happened to the nearest police station which was ten li away. When the police arrived at the scene, the bandits were still lying on the ground, groaning from pain.
Huo’s fellow students were extremely grateful to him. “If it was not for you,” they said. “we would have been in big trouble.”
“Not at all,” Huo replied. “If I were alone, I might not have won. You see, with all of you standing behind me, I needn’t worry about my back. Even though you didn’t fight, your presence boosted my courage. That’s why I was able to beat them.”
