King Xuan of Qi loved flute music. He had a band of three hundred musicians playing for him. When Mr. Nan Guo applied to be a member of the ensemble, the king gladly hired him. But Mr. Nan Guo could not play. Still he got the same pay as the other players.
After the king’s death, his son King Min preferred solo performance and asked the musicians to play one by one. Mr. Nan Guo was forced to quit.
