King Zhuang of Chu was so fond of hunting he often neglected his work. His wife, Lady Fan, admonished him, but he turned a deaf ear to her. So she refused to eat any game he brought back. The king eventually gave up hunting.

One day the king came home late. Lady Fan asked why.

“I had a very interesting conversation in the palace.”

“Who were you talking with?”

“Prime Minister Yu Qiuzi.”

Lady Fan sneered.

“Why did you sneer?”

“I don’t think Yu Qiuzi is a loyal minister.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I’ve been your wife for eleven years. I often recruit pretty women for you. I am never jealous of them or afraid they may compete with me for your favor. Now Yu Qiuzi has been your prime minister for ten years. But I’ve never heard him recommending anybody. If he knows a talented man but does not recommend him to you, he is not loyal to you. If he does not know any one to recommend, he is not doing his job. Such a man I can only laugh at.”

When the king told him of Lady Fan’s remarks, Yu Qiuzi was at a loss what to say. Shortly after that he handed in his resignation and recommended Sun Shu-ao to take his place. Under Sun Shu-ao, Qi was well-run and enjoyed unprecedented prosperity.
