Once when his army was passing through a wheat field, Cao Cao issued an order that anyone trampling the crop would be put to death. All the cavalry soldiers got down from their horses to walk. But his own horse ran into the field, causing much damage to the crops. Cao Cao called on his law officer to punish him. But the officer said the army could not be without a commander.

“I laid down the rules,” Cao Cao said. “If I were not punished, how could I expect others to follow me?”

He cut off his hair with his sword as a punishment on himself and had it displayed to all his soldiers, symbolizing his head.
