Gan Mao was prime minister of Qin. One day one of his subordinates overheard the king talking to Gongsun Yan.

“I am going to name you prime minister,” the king said.

The next day Gan Mao went to see the king and offered his congratulations. “Your Majesty has selected an excellent candidate as my replacement.”

“Who is going to be your replacement?” The king was surprised.

“I heard you are going to appoint Gongsun Yan to be my successor.”

“Who told you so?”

“Gongsun Yan himself.”

The king was so annoyed he sent Gongsun Yan into exile on account of having disclosed a confidential matter.
