A tiger caught a fox and was about to eat it.
"Don't you dare eat me!" said the fox. "I am sent by God to be the king of the jungle. If you do me any harm, you'll run afoul with God."
"What proof do you have that you are sent by God?" demanded the tiger.
"Follow me and you'll witness how other animals react when they see me."
The tiger agreed and walked behind the fox. When other animals saw them, they shied away. The tiger was convinced that they were afraid of the fox.

Self-promotion, when done foxily, can be quite effective.
