King Wu, founder of the Zhou dynasty, called upon a venerable elder of the Shang dynasty which he had overthrown. He wanted to know the man's opinion about Shang's fall. The elder made an appointment with him the following day to discuss.
King Wu went there with his brother, but the man never showed up. The king was upset. His brother had an inspiration.
"I understand. The man used to serve in the Shang court. He is unwilling to criticize his dead king before a conqueror."
"Then why did he make the appointment?"
"He made the appointment yet did not show up. He is telling you the reason Shang had fallen: the king of Shang had failed to keep his promise to the people and consequently lost their support. I believe that is the message he wants to convey to you."
