
Fame or life, which is more precious? Health or wealth, which is more important? Gaining fame and wealth or losing life and health, which is more desirable?
If you are too miserly, you will pay a dear price. If you hold on to too much wealth, you will suffer heavy losses. If you know when to be content, you will not suffer disgrace. If you don’t know where to stop, you will put yourself in danger.
Lights and colors blind the eyes. Sound and fury deafen the ears. Flavors and spices numb the tongue. The pursuit of pleasure drives you out of your mind. The possession of rare treasures induces you to do wrong things.
If you indulge in your desires without restraint, you will be heading for destruction.
Take less, and you will have more. Desire more, and you will be obsessed.
No disaster is greater than insatiable desires. No vice is worse than limitless greed. He who is content will always be sufficient. That is why the sage shuns excess, extravagance and extreme.
Cherish simple life and plain honesty. Have fewer desires and be less selfish.
When the desires of men are curbed, there will be peace in mind. When there is peace in mind, there will be peace in the world.
If you know others, you are smart. If you know yourself, you are enlightened. If you defeat others, you have power. If you conquer yourself, you have real strength.
One third of men are destined to have a long life. One third are destined to have a short life. And the other one third could have lived a long life but it is cut short. Why? Because they are obsessed with preserving their life.
