One day Xi Simi, a government minister in Qi, called upon Viscount Tian Cheng, the most powerful man in the country. He was taken to a tower to look at the scenery. The view was splendid except that it was obstructed in the south by the trees grown in the garden of Xi Simi's house. The viscount said nothing.
When he got home, Xi Simi ordered his servants to chop the trees down. Just as they started cutting, he stopped them.
"Why did you change your mind, sir?" his aide asked.
"The viscount is working on a secret scheme. If he knew I could read his mind, I would be in danger. Not to cut down the trees won't be much of an offense but knowing something that he does not like me to know will have serious consequences."
